If you enjoyed HBO's “Chernobyl” TV series, you will probably like Netflix's “Radioactive Emergency”.
It talks about a small city of Goiânia in 1987. An abandoned clinic was robbed by marauders taking out a heavy item that contained a powder of Cesium-137. They brought it home, gave it to kids and neighbours. I will not write more spoilers here.
What resonated with me is:
- Excellent actor work, it is very convincing, better than in Chernobyl
- It shows how people react under stress: emotionally, illogically
- It also shows how officials often lack the protocols and ways to talk to people to convince them
- Complete unpreparedness to handle cases of discharged patients: they had nowhere to go, no money, no clothes, but the system simply threw them out
This is one of those series that show how dangerous it is to handle stuff that you do not understand and how authorities should have proper emergency protocols and especially communication.
